A journey with perspective.
Make room for the journey, as well as the objective.
Longer mountain itineraries need a realistic assessment of fitness, technical ability, access and altitude. An expedition should be shaped around the group rather than a promised summit or a fixed number of descents.
Build a realistic brief.
Include previous high-altitude experience, recent mountain routes, preferred trip length and comfort with simple accommodation or winter camping. Confirm accommodation, transport and equipment responsibilities in writing before committing.
Altitude changes the plan.
Allow time for gradual acclimatisation and extra days for weather. Headache, nausea, unusual fatigue or deteriorating coordination at altitude need prompt attention. Follow qualified medical advice and the trip leader’s procedures; continuing upward is never the priority when someone is unwell.
Ask about the contingencies.
Discuss evacuation options, communication limitations, access restrictions and turnaround criteria. A summit or planned route cannot be guaranteed.
