Preparation is part of the adventure.
Mountain travel involves real risk. Thoughtful preparation and qualified local advice are essential; no website can assess the conditions of your trip.
Avalanche awareness
Off-piste snow can be unstable, including close to ski areas. Discuss how snow conditions are assessed, how terrain decisions are made and when an objective will be abandoned. Carry appropriate rescue equipment and know how to use it; equipment does not make a slope safe.
Ability and equipment
Give an honest account of your skiing, fitness and mountain experience. Request a route-specific kit list. Confirm how avalanche transceivers, probes, shovels and other technical equipment will be supplied, checked and practised with.
Build in flexibility
Cold, wind, poor visibility and altitude can change a day quickly. Plan acclimatisation where needed, carry adequate layers and agree turnaround criteria. Follow medical advice about personal health and altitude-related illness.
Ask specific questions
Confirm emergency communications, first-aid provision, evacuation options and who makes decisions. Mobile coverage and rescue access may be limited. Do not assume helicopter rescue is available.
Before you travel
- Read your government’s current Iran travel advice, including consular assistance limitations.
- Verify entry requirements and any itinerary-specific permissions through appropriate official channels.
- Obtain written confirmation of insurance cover for Iran, the activity, altitude and evacuation.
- Check transport, payment arrangements, cancellation terms and contingency budgets.
- Respect local customs, communities and environmental guidance. Carry out waste and minimise disturbance.
Questions worth asking.
Is an itinerary guaranteed?
No. Weather, snow stability, health, access and operational constraints can require changes or cancellation. Confirm the applicable terms in writing.
Do I need avalanche training?
Discuss relevant training and practical rescue skills with your proposed guide. A briefing is not a substitute for appropriate training or experience.
Can I rely on travel insurance?
Only your insurer can confirm cover. Ask explicitly about Iran, off-piste skiing, ski touring, helicopter-accessed skiing where relevant, altitude limits and evacuation.
Where should I check travel advice?
Use your own government’s official advice. Examples include the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, the US Department of State and your country’s foreign ministry.
